Battista
Automobili Pininfarina Battista Pure form. Pure energy. Pure sensation. Pure driving experience. For 90 years, Pininfarina has been at the forefront of automotive design, creating a succession of era-defining icons for Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Ferrari. Today, the company that Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina founded in 1930 is both a design consultancy and an automobile manufacturer in its own right. The first model to carry the Pininfarina badge is the all-electric Battista, the most powerful road-legal car ever designed and built in Italy. Its aim, in the words of CEO Per Svantesson, is ‘to make the world love electric vehicles’. Just 150 examples will be hand crafted.

Design

Design made Pininfarina’s reputation; the Battista reinvents it. According to Chief Design Officer, Luca Borgogno, “We wanted to use as many sensual shapes as possible – very Italian, with curves, to give back a feeling of the cars of the ‘60s and the moment in time when sensual design in cars was to the fore and when Pininfarina really became iconic.” From the first glance, you know they’ve succeeded. Though capable of almost 220mph, the Battista’s stunning carbon fibre body is simple, curvaceous and unspoiled, with a classic teardrop cabin shape and bodywork that elegantly integrates both active and passive aerodynamics. Inside, controls are finished in brushed anodized aluminium, many with special knurling for added grip. Luxurious quilting on the seats, door inserts, centre console and knee pads cossets driver and passenger, while the dials are finished in a special anodized Blu Iconica.

Features

The Battista’s infotainment system includes music streaming and advanced telemetry. Screens are thoughtfully positioned within the eyeline of the driver, presenting essential data and driver guidance, while the audio system has been specially developed by renowned British audio experts NAIM to suit the acoustic qualities of the cockpit. An internal eSIM means that the car is constantly connected to the internet, with real-time navigation available in over fifty countries worldwide. Mindful that owners of conventional supercars expect an aural experience from their vehicles’ powertrain – be it a V12, V10 or V8 – the Automobili Pininfarina team have created a unique and authentic audio signature for the Battista, generated from the car’s electric motors, exterior air flow and the resonance of the carbon monocoque.

Performance

Remember when Bugatti stunned the world with the 1,000hp Veyron? The Battista is almost twice as powerful. The four electric motors (one per wheel) deliver a combined 1,400kW, which equates to 1,900 metric horsepower. Peak torque is even more outlandish at 2,300Nm, and unlike internal combustion engines, maximum torque is available from zero rpm. These remarkable figures explain why Automobili Pininfarina are confident the Battista will accelerate from standstill to 62mph (100km/h) in less than two seconds, which is faster than a Formula One car. Incredibly, zero to 186mph (300 km/h) takes less than 12.0 seconds. Power is provided by a 120kWh battery, giving a theoretical maximum range of almost 280 miles. Though not, we’d imagine, if you’re travelling at the Battista’s top speed of 217mph.

Technology

Powerful batteries are heavy and bulky, two enemies of sports car design. And while many saloon and SUV EVs have their batteries in the floorpan, that’s not an option for a low, lithe supercar like the Battista. Instead, the battery pack is accommodated within the carbon fibre monocoque in a T-shape configuration, in the centre tunnel dividing driver and passenger and behind the cockpit (the EV equivalent of a mid-engine layout) for optimum weight distribution and low exterior profile. Automobili Pininfarina has partnered with high performance EV pioneers Rimac for their battery and drivetrain expertise, software and hardware. Five radiators provide cooling, and the brakes are carbon ceramic discs with six-piston callipers; 390mm diameter at the front, 380mm at the rear. Despite the immense power at the driver’s disposal, the Battista is designed to deliver ultimate drivability, with a choice of five driving modes, whose characteristics were honed by Nick Heidfeld, test and development driver, Formula E driver and ex-F1 driver.
