AMG in the Mercedes-Benz range

Many car brands have a way to differentiate between the most extreme, or the most high-performance models in the range. Just as Audi does with its “S” models, and BMW with its “M” range, Mercedes-Benz use the AMG moniker to make certain models stand out from the rest.

Mercedes-Benz uses the AMG name for those models in the range that benefit from bigger engines, have additions such as carbon fibre parts, showcase world-class handling and driving experience and generally have more sporty assets than other models.

What are the stand-out models, what does AMG stand for in relation to its place within the Mercedes-Benz range, and where did the name come from?

What does AMG stand for?

Founded in 1967, AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach. The AM is representative of the last names of the two founders of AMG, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Melcher did step down as a partner of AMG but his initial remained in the name, nonetheless. Finally, the G is used to pay homage to the home of the founders, the German town of Großaspach.

What is the history of AMG?

After designing and testing racing engines, in the 1970’s, AMG became the associated modifier of Mercedes-Benz. With a huge focus on craftsmanship and quality, AMG employs a handmade approach to its engines – the engine will be made from start to finish by one individual and a signed, engraved plaque will be fixed to the engine block.

There are in fact, only 50 builders in the AMG engine department.

Following development and further racing exploitations, in 1990 Mercedes-Benz and AMG signed an agreement, meaning that AMG upgrades were available and serviceable through certain Mercedes-Benz dealerships across the world.

In 1993 the first joint Mercedes-Benz and AMG production vehicle was released, the C36 AMG, a variation of the standard Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the partnership has gone from strength to strength ever since.

What AMG Models are there?

Over the years Mercedes-Benz and AMG have worked in collaboration to produce some iconic performance cars such as 1997’s CLK GTR and the SLS AMG in 2010, equipped with the brand’s iconic and jaw-dropping Gullwing doors.

Currently, there are several models available in the Mercedes-Benz AMG range, and here are a few in more detail below.

Mercedes-AMG C 63 S

Styled in the same way as the C-Class and available in the same four body styles, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S brings a motorsport-inspired interior to the table as well as an incredible twin-turbo 4.0l engine. Providing a wonderful driving experience with magnificent handling, huge agility and impressive performance, the model has to be driven to be believed. As you’d expect, the standard features and styling are stunning, with a mix of nappa leather, brushed metal and gloss-black surfaces and the safety devices and options that come with the C63 protect the driver, passengers and pedestrians.

Mercedes-AMG GLB 35

For those looking for an SUV with unrivalled performance, Mercedes-Benz and AMG bring you the GLB 35. Based on the impressive GLB model, AMG’s engineers have brought a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 306hp to the range.

Already possessing the looks and versatility of an AMG model, the GLB has been given the performance treatment without losing any of its practicality.

Like the standard model, the GLB 35 still has seven seats and a go-anywhere attitude.

Standard features are excellent, as is the safety of the vehicle and the GLB provides the SUV experience with additional performance as well as added luxury and distinctive design.

Mercedes-AMG SL

This performance-focused roadster is a combination of the sporting traits of the original model, the AMG standards of performance and the typical Mercedes-Benz luxury.

The stunning performance levels make this a wonderful car for putting your foot down on the open road, yet it also brings with it a level of everyday suitability. In a 2+2 formation, the electric soft roof takes just 15 seconds to open or close and can be done at speeds up to 37mph.

Two powertrains are available for the AMG SL, and there are many personalisation options on offer – not to mention the multitude of technological and safety features included as standard.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG range is extensive, and there are many other models available. For more information, to browse the latest availability of new and used Mercedes-Benz cars, check out the online listings or contact yournearest Jardine Motors dealership.
