The iconic Volkswagen Golf is 40 years old in 2016 and to mark the occasion, Volkswagen has created a stunning new Golf GTI Clubsport.
The special edition model is the most powerful Golf GTI yet with a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine that delivers 265 brake horsepower. Plus, an additional ‘overboost’ function can temporarily increase the engine power to 290bhp.
The Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40 is available as a three- or five-door model with a six-speed manual gearbox or direct-shift gearbox (DSG). The DSG version is also equipped with launch control as standard.
The new car’s top speed is limited to 155 mph and the 0-62 mph time is a brisk 6.3 seconds. It’s very fast – the Clubsport S broke the Nürburgring lap record time by 1.4 seconds this month.
CO2 emissions range between 158 g/km and 162 g/km depending on the body style and transmission choice, while combined fuel economy varies between 40.9 mpg and 40.4 mpg.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40 is agile thanks to its lower-ride sports chassis. It also has improved handling characteristics from a new spring layout, newly tuned dampers and optimised bump stops.
These measures work alongside the specially modified aerodynamics to deliver high agility and steering precision. And the car has an optimised grip and extremely precise driving stability at high speed.
The Clubsport comes with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. These exclusive ‘Quaranta’ forged wheels are nearly 3kg lighter per wheel than conventional alloys.
For this very special Golf GTI, Volkswagen exterior designers have created a completely new front bumper, side sills, rear diffuser and roof spoiler. They aimed to help the car stand out and, more importantly, to create valuable downforce and improve the car’s dynamic handling.
The new GTI Clubsport design offers improvements to air flow and air supply to the engine. The redesigned multi-part roof edge spoiler has been aerodynamically perfected in a wind tunnel to significantly increase downforce on the rear axle.
Inside, the new car features iconic details that are essential for every GTI. These include the ergonomic sports seats in tailor-made style featuring Alcantara fabric and black cloth upholstery with red topstitching. The GTI Clubsport also has the classic black headliner and golf ball design gear knob.
The new Clubsport black honeycomb patterns with red seams perfectly complement the sporty interior.
The anniversary GTI Edition 40 model is available with optional black painted roof combined with one of the body colours: Pure White, Tornado Red, Reflex Silver, Urano Grey, Carbon Grey Metallic or Oryx White with mother of pearl effect. The solid colour Deep Black pearl effect is also available.
Production of the new Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40 is time limited. It is anticipated that no more than 1000 cars will be available to UK buyers.
The Clubsport is available to order now, priced from £30,875, with deliveries of the first cars expected this summer. Contact your nearest Lancaster Volkswagen dealership for more information.
