Since the 2016 Toyota Hilux was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, it caused quite a stir – for all the right reasons. Now it has arrived in the UK, and if the UK launch event is anything to go by, it’s going to be a huge hit.

This pioneering pick-up is already being described as ‘one of the best models in its class to drive on and off road’, and the UK launch’s rural, picturesque setting of Buckinghamshire was chosen as the perfect proving ground for journalists to try out the Hilux on varying terrains.

Starting on the tarmac, drivers followed the pre-programmed seven-inch touchscreen sat-nav around Buckinghamshire, discovering the many clever features in the comfortable cabin and experiencing how the Hilux would feel driving day-to-day.

Heading off-road, an accompanying instructor assisted drivers in taking on treacherous and muddy terrain, with heavy rain adding to the mix. The wet weather gave the Hilux a chance to put its skills to the test, tackling the trail with ease.

A tougher chassis, enhanced 4x4 capabilities and a new four-wheel-drive switch all assisted the cross-country challenge, as well as advanced Downhill Assist Control (DAC), maintaining stability whilst travelling downhill in off-road conditions.

The new and more efficient 2.4-litre D-4D diesel engine, with its responsive torque delivery, helped the drivers to defeat steep hills, muddy fields and deep flowing rivers, making off-roading incredibly fun and rewarding.
