BMW i3 2022

DESIGN

The snub nose, BMW kidney grille and wheel-at-each-corner design makes the i3 instantly recognisable. The side profile is equally distinctive, with a ‘notched’ shoulder line on the rear-hinged rear doors creating deeper window profiles to give rear-seat passengers a better view. The i3’s construction combines carbon-fibre reinforced plastic and aluminium; this saves weight for greater efficiency. Inside, the i3 makes extensive use of natural and recycled materials. A limited-edition of 2000 Unique Forever models is available with Aventurine Red metallic paint and Frozen Grey metallic accents, or Storm Bay metallic paint finish with Frozen E-Copper accents. These special models also come with Suite trim, which includes Vernasca Dark Truffle leather upholstery, dark matt oak wood trim, leather steering wheel, Carum grey roof lining and ambient lighting.

PERFORMANCE

Two models are available, the i3 and the sportier i3s. The i3 develops 170hp and will accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds, performance that would leave a lot of sporty hatchbacks in its wake. The i3s is even faster, accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds. The downside of using that extra performance is a slight reduction in range; the i3 is claimed to offer up to 190 miles’ range, while the i3s manages up to 175 miles. Both models are rear-drive and powered by a Li-ion battery with active cooling and 38kWh usable energy.

TECHNOLOGY

All i3 models come with a 10.2-inch infotainment screen and BMW Navigation System Pro with real-time traffic information as standard. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and DAB radio, while a harmon/kardon audio system is an option. The My BMW App allows you to plan your next trip, check the charging status of your vehicle or use remote service functions from your smartphone.

SAFETY

In the event of an accident, the carbon-fibre reinforced plastic bodywork offers excellent protection. To prevent accidents happening, the i3 is equipped with Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control and Drive Performance Control, which reduces over and under-steering via wheel-specific braking interventions on the rear axle.
