The Ferrari 488 GTB has won Autocar Magazine’s maximum five-star rating in their comprehensive road test. The test includes extensive driving on the road by the Autocar editorial team as well as performance evaluation at MIRA test track.
The Autocar five-star awards recognise the best cars, chosen from the team’s thorough test drives. Only a handful of cars have ever been awarded five stars.
The Ferrari 488 GTB follows on from the 458 Speciale, which was awarded a five-star rating last year.
The 488 GTB completed the course in 1 minute 8 seconds exactly, which was 0.3 seconds quicker than the 458 Speciale on the same circuit.
Autocar’s editorial team commented: “Ferrari’s greatest achievement with the 488 GTB is not simply how fast it goes. Nor is it how it has integrated turbochargers onto its mid-mounted V8 yet retained far more character than any other manufacturer has tried artificially aspirating its engines.”
“Nor is it that it has given the 488 all the track poise and agility of the 458 Speciale which went before it. No, the feat is how all of the above have been melded into what is undoubtedly today’s greatest supercar.”
They proclaimed the car “world-beating” and “likely to be benchmarked and copied – much like the 458 Italia.”
Raffaele de Simone, Ferrari’s chief test driver, collected the five-star trophy at the Autocar awards at Silverstone Circuit in May.
On the night, Ferrari were also awarded a trophy for Britain’s Best Driver’s Car, which the 488 GTB won at Autocar’s ‘Handling Day’ test at Snetterton track last October.
The Ferrari 488 GTB is the manufacturer’s first mid-engine turbocharged supercar since the F40. The team claim it retains the driving performance and excitement of the F40, while maintaining “unprecedented levels of usability and practicality”.
The 488 GTB comes with the Ferrari Genuine Maintenance package, which covers all major servicing costs for seven years, making it an award-winning supercar that can be driven every day.
