The 911 - As Individual as its Owner
Since its premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 12 September 1963, the 911 has gained a prestigious reputation as the benchmark sportscar. Sketched out and designed in 1959 by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, son of the founder, it intended to serve as the replacement for the company's original 356 model. 60 years on and all 911s are now wider, longer and faster than ever before. In addition, with around 25 model variants, each nuance of specification brings a unique expression of power, performance, poise and purpose – akin to its very individual owner. To celebrate the anniversary, Porsche has released a limited run of the lightweight and zippy 911 S/T edition.
The Evolution of Cool
True to its sporting heritage, the 911 has evolved over the last six decades through all eight generations of unrivalled engineering. From air-cooled to water-cooled engines, from PDK-only gearbox to the seven-speed manual transmission, swan neck mounted wings to ducktail rear, from Targa to Turbo, from Carrera to Cabriolet and the unmistakable GT and Specialist models – 911 continues to please the eye and deliver on drive.
A Trail of Milestones
The year 2017 marked a milestone of the millionth 911 being built. The Porsche GT Team celebrated the class victory with the 911 RSR in 2018 at Le Mans 24 Hrs. A demanding race of driving at the limit for an unforgivingly long time, with extreme braking manoeuvres, while facing crazy weather with heat, rain, and night-time fog banks. The most expensive purchase was in 2019 when the 1998 911 GT1 Strassenversion commanded an eye-watering $5,665,000 at auction. Fast forward to 2023 and the UK Porsche entry steered the 911 RSR to winning third podium spot in the Le Mans GTE-Am class with a testing 312 laps!
