New Performance Golf Overview

Even if Volkswagen didn’t invent the hot hatchback, it certainly perfected it. The new Golf is described by VW as Mk.7.5 and it features several small but significant upgrades over the 7th generation model. The iconic GTI name continues to define fast, rewarding performance and bullet-proof engineering, but the performance range also includes GTD diesel and GTE hybrid power as well as the ultimate performance Golf, the all-wheel drive Golf R.

Design

Visually the new Golf is closely related to the 7th generation model that precedes it, with subtle changes to bumpers, lights and grille. Other new features include all-new alloy wheels, extra brightwork and red winglets beneath the LED headlights. Inside, the GTI features the traditional tartan upholstery and red detailing, while as a nice touch the hybrid GTE reflects the same design theme in blue. Both the GTD and Golf R are also available in load-swallowing Estate versions.

Performance

The new GTI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four, developing 227bhp in standard form and 242bhp in its Performance version. There’s a choice of six-speed manual gearbox or the new seven-speed DSG twin-clutch auto. 0-62mph takes 6.4 seconds for the GTI, while the frugal GTD performance diesel takes 7.4 seconds while delivering a remarkable 61.4mpg on the combined cycle.

For a different take on performance with efficiency, the GTE plug-in hybrid offers zero-emission motoring while in electric mode and reaches 0-62mph in 7.6s. King of the hill is the all-wheel drive Golf R, with a 0-62mph time of just 4.6 seconds (3-door DSG).

Technology

All Mk.7.5 Golfs feature an innovative new infotainment system and the new Active Info Display, a digital driver display that can shrink the speedo and rev counter to show information like the satellite navigation mapping. The new Discover Pro infotainment system is intuitive to use, with a crisp, clear display. Car-Net App connect allows seamless mirroring of the Apple Car Play or Google Android Auto on the infotainment touchscreen. Another Car-Net feature, Guide and Inform, gives online access to live traffic information, parking space availability and even news feeds.

Safety

Volkswagen extends its excellent reputation for safety with a host of safety features on all performance Golfs, including Electronic Differential Lock, electronic tyre-pressure monitoring, Front Assist including Adaptive Cruise Control, a pre-crash preventative occupant protection system and driver alert.
