Volkswagen T-Roc

Compact SUV with flair as well as functionality

Back in the 1960s, when cars weren’t as reliable as they are today, Volkswagen once advertised the dependable Beetle with the line “It’s ugly, but it gets you there”. No such compromise is needed with the T-Roc, a crossover compact SUV that’s both good-looking and highly accomplished. Available with a choice of two or four-wheel drive, it offers a high degree of personalisation as well as a host of in-car technologies to attract young (and young at heart) buyers who may have been considering other premium brands.

T-Roc R Line

If SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, Volkswagen’s designers tended towards the Sport and not the Utility with the T-Roc. It is a good-looking vehicle with a raked rear windscreen, a shallow glasshouse and strongly accentuated wheel arches. Volkswagen design signatures like the horizontal grille, sharp creases and clean, unfussy lines are all present. The coupé style is emphasised by the chrome strip running the length of the roof and you can have contrasting colours on the roof, A-pillar and door mirrors if you choose the Design specification.

T Roc R Line

To begin with Volkswagen will offer the T-Roc in the UK with a choice of three petrol engines, though diesels will be introduced later – ask our sales staff for details. The petrol engine choices include a 1.0-litre 115PS three cylinder, a 1.5-litre four cylinder with 150PS (147bhp) and the range-topping 2.0-litre 190PS (187bhp). Four-wheel drive 4MOTION and a DSG gearbox are standard with the 2.0-litre model, which can hit 0-62mph in a brisk 7.2 seconds. Most economical petrol T-Roc is the 1.0 TSI which achieves 55.4 combined mpg and emits just 117g/km of CO2

All T-Rocs get Volkswagen’s front assist system as standard, which lets you know if it detects a possible collision with audible as well as visual warnings. If you don’t react in time, City Emergency Braking slows the car to reduce impact speed or even avoid a collision. Lane Assist and Pre-Crash Occupant Protection are other standard features. If you’re venturing off road, the 4MOTION Active Control allows you to set the driving mode to the weather and road conditions – modes are On-road, Off-road, Off-road Individual and Snow.

There are three trim levels to choose from: SE, Design and SEL. SE models feature LED day-running lights, electrically heated and folding wing mirrors, automatic wipers and lights, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors as standard. You’ll also enjoy dual-zone climate control and Volkswagen’s 8.0in touchscreen infotainment, together with DAB radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration. Design adds a sporty bodykit, different wheel designs, contrasting roof, tinted rear windows, interior ambient lighting and a choice of vivid dashboard and door trim colours. Top-of-the-range SEL adds LED headlights and satnav as well as Volkswagen’s clear 10.3 Active Info display in front of the driver, replacing the standard dials.
