Volkswagen Tiguan Overview

Volkswagen has a habit of setting the benchmark for an entire vehicle category, and the new Tiguan nails it for the compact SUV class. Smooth-riding, refined, versatile and available with innumerable engine and drivetrain options, it’s what smart people look for in a premium compact SUV – and it’s a great-looking vehicle into the bargain.

DESIGN

The new Tiguan is lower, longer and wider than the model it replaces so is even more spacious for driver and passengers than before. Boot space with the 40:20:40 rear seats up is a useful 520 litres, increasing to 1,655 with all three rear seats down. The look is classic, restrained and classy in the evolving Volkswagen design language, with sharply-sculpted lines and balanced proportions. The new-design bumper, headlamps with LED daytime running lights and full-width grille are crisp, clean and convey a premium feel.

PERFORMANCE

You can choose anything from a two-wheel drive, 2.0-litre TDI that delivers 60.1mpg (remarkable economy for such a roomy SUV) to the range-topping bi-turbo 2.0 BiTDI with 240bhp, 4Motion all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox that manages the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds. It’s all in the Tiguan range, as well as a choice of 1.4 TSI (125 and 150PS) and 2.0 TSI 180 engines should you prefer petrol to diesel.

4Motion all-wheel drive comes as standard on the 2.0 TSI 180 petrol, 2.0 TDI 190 diesel and BiTDI 240 diesel. If you like handling to be on the sporty side, consider Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive dampers as an option. Alternatively, there’s an Outdoor suspension option which raises the ride height by 15mm – worth considering if you’re an outdoor type who likes to venture off the beaten track.

TECHNOLOGY

Volkswagen has upgraded its in-car technology across most of its model ranges for 2017 and the new Tiguan is no exception. All models get crisp, responsive new touchscreens and the higher the trim level you choose, the more capabilities you’ll enjoy – all the way up to the 12.3-inch Active Info Display, which replaces the conventional analogue instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.

SAFETY

Safety features like automatic lights, Front Assist with city emergency braking and rain sensitive wipers come as standard across the range. The Tiguan has scored a maximum 5-stars under the EuroNCAP rating system, with an excellent 96 per cent adult occupant safety rating.
