New technology, refreshed design and more fuel efficiency for VW’s top estate
If the trend towards the SUV has taken the spotlight off estate cars, the newest Passat Estate might just prompt a rethink. Not only is it a mile-munching, load-swallowing all-rounder, it’s now even better looking and even more frugal at the fuel pumps. Models like the PHEV GTE Estate with its 35-mile EV capability and the off-road Passat Alltrack broaden your options.
Exterior changes for the new Passat Estate include new front and rear bumpers, a mild redesign of the radiator grille and the relocation of the Passat logo to the centre rear. New LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, and LED taillight clusters complete the refresh. Inside, you’ll find new trim finishes and fabrics, redesigned door trims, a new trim colour, new instruments and a new multifunction steering wheel as standard. Rear luggage space is unchanged from the previous model, with 650 litres that grows to 1780 litres of space with all rear seats down.Meanwhile the chunky Alltrack, with its higher ride height, purpose-designed bumpers and grey wheelarch protectors, looks ready for tough terrain. Another Estate-only model, the stylish R-Line Edition, features Edition Black styling with Pretoria’ Dark Graphite Matt alloy wheels.
Two petrol engines and three diesels will be available from launch. The petrol drivetrains are based on a 2.0 TSI four-cylinder engine with power outputs of 190PS and 272PS, both mated to seven-speed DSG transmissions. The 272PS model is only available with four-wheel drive. Shortly after launch these will be joined by a new, highly efficient 150PS engine based on a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. This will be offered with either six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG and will come as standard with Active Cylinder Shutdown to save fuel when cruising or decelerating.
Diesel models include the 120PS 118bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.0 TDI which again is available in a choice of 190 or 240PS. All drivetrains pass the stringent Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard and include particulate filters.
For the ultimate in fuel efficiency in town, the GTE Estate is a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) with an increased electric-only zero-emissions range of 35 miles on the latest WLTP standards. This produces a combined 220PS.
Big news for the new Passat Estate is the upgrade in interior technology; these include a new multi-function steering wheel with capacitive touch sensors on the button areas digital instruments and a wider high-definition infotainment system replacing analogue dials. Other features include seamless smartphone integration, Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Assist and parking sensors as standard.
The new Passat Estate features I.Q. Drive, a Level 2 assistance system that combines adaptive cruise control, lane assist and other safety features to allow the Passat to control acceleration, braking and steering functions at speeds between zero and 130mph. The system can also recognise roundabouts, junctions and speed-limit changes, and adjust itself accordingly. Another standard feature, the Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring System will alert you to pedestrians in the road and brake automatically if the driver fails to react.
Verdict: the Passat Estate makes a strong case for itself as a capacious, refined, efficient and good-looking all-rounder. Even if you need off-road capability, the Passat Alltrack will keep up with all but the most rugged SUVs off road while offering superior handling and fuel-efficiency on tarmac. The latest updates aren’t dramatic, but they add more technology and safety to an already very impressive package.
