Porsche’s Macan is a game-changer among compact SUVs. It does all the usual SUV stuff – carrying people, kit and luggage with consummate ease. But unlike other examples of the genre it’s also a genuinely thrilling car to drive, with handling and agility that seem at odds with its size and space. And among Porsche Macans, the Turbo is the flagship; blisteringly fast and lavishly equipped.
The Macan Turbo is impressively well equipped, and in-car infotainment technology includes Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with navigation module and Connect Plus with a large touchscreen display. Parking sensors, alarm, cruise control, automatic tailgate, DAB and Bluetooth are all standard, as are Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus. This feature offers a dynamic cornering function as well as speed-sensitive headlight range control. A BOSE® Surround Sound System is standard, though there’s the option to upgrade to a Burmeister® audio system.
The Macan’s balanced lines and design echoes of Porsche’s sports cars make it a good-looking vehicle, whatever the model. The Macan Turbo takes all that and turns the dial up to 11. From the front you’ll notice a muscular front airdam with large air intakes housing ‘floating’ LED running lights and direction indicators. Below them, the spoiler lip design was apparently inspired by the 918 Spyder. Body colour SportDesign side skirts and red brake callipers within 19” Turbo-specific wheels continue the high-performance design theme, while a Macan Turbo badge on the tailgate and twin-exhaust tailpipes either side tell other road users what has just passed them.
Inside, the leather package comes as standard, as do brushed aluminium trim, Alcantara™ headlining, 18-way memory adaptive sports seats and a multifunction steering wheel. Privacy glass, panoramic sunroof and alloy wheels of up to 21” diameter are among the many options.
Though every model in the range apart from the 2.0-litre Macan is turbocharged, the Macan Turbo is unique in being powered by a 3.6-litre twin-turbo V6. This develops 400 metric horsepower (about 394bhp) and a towering 550Nm of torque. The latter figure, often considered a more revealing measure of real-world performance, is developed from just 1350rpm and stays that way until 4,500rpm. What does it all mean? 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds (in an SUV!), a top speed of 165mph and vast amounts of oomph whenever you press on the throttle pedal.
Keeping everything on line and the right way up are the Macan’s standard steel suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management, though air suspension is optional. Also standard is Porsche Traction Management (PTM), an active all-wheel drive system with electronic and map-controlled multi-plate clutch, plus automatic brake differential (ABD) and anti-slip regulation (ASR).
The Macan Turbo features up to 10 airbags (rear sidebags are optional), while Porsche Stability Management helps to ensure you don’t need them. This system monitors driving direction, speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration, intervening to stabilise the vehicle by strategically braking individual wheels. It also primes the brakes for faster reaction if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator. If panic braking does ensue, the adaptive LED brake lights begin to pulsate, alerting following traffic. Another feature, lane departure warning, keeps drivers on line if their attention wanders.
As with Porsche’s Cayenne luxury SUV and the Porsche 911 sports car, the Turbo model is the performance flagship of the Macan line-up. So if you need a little more space than a 911 Turbo can give you, but not as much as the Cayenne Turbo, you could find a Macan Turbo the perfect compromise between the two. A compact SUV that thinks it’s a super sports car – and performs like one.
