The action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled Japan Automobile Federation Super GT Championship’s 2016 season has started with a bang, and Lexus is already succeeding thanks to its serious pre-season testing.
Saturday 19th March saw the first official test day of the year for Super GT, with a wet two-hour morning session followed by a much drier two-hour afternoon session. The Lexus RC F dominated the top four times, with Kazuya Oshima breaking the track record and recording the quickest lap time of the day.
Without any electronic aids, including ABS, traction and stability controls, the Super GT is raw racing, plus GT300 and GT500 classes race together, boasting different power outputs. The GT500 class sees six Lexus RC F cars powered by a 2.0-litre, inline 4-cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged engine (RI4AG) driven by five teams under the LEXUS GAZOO Racing name.
Round 1 at the Okayama International Circuit in Japan was held on 9th – 10th April, and in this first event, the six Lexus RC F racers all impressively finished in the top ten, coming 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Round 2 is at Fuji Speedway, Japan, on 3rd – 4th May, so the LEXUS GAZOO Racing team will be looking to improve on their positions, gaining more podium positions.
The season ends with Round 8 on 12th – 13th November, concluding at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. The team has made an incredible start, but can they go the distance? Follow the Super GT this season to find out.
