The last word in strength and off-road capabilities as well as luxury, the G63 AMG is truly unlike any other model on the road.
The most powerful edition of Mercedes’ legendary Geländewagen is big, brutal and fast, giving it huge appeal to those who live for the thrill of off-road motoring.

The G-Class SUV is not so much a vehicle model as an institution – and the GL63 AMG’s rugged, massive rectilinear frame, with its trademark circular headlights, is proportionally little different from the 1979 original. The two-bar chrome radiator grille, prominent air intakes and flared wheel arches containing 20” alloy wheels, along with bi-xenon lights atop daytime running lights, emphasise the unique G-Class looks. Despite its rugged, utilitarian appearance, no luxury is denied to the driver and passengers of the G63 AMG once they climb inside an interior swathed in high-quality nappa leather and illuminated by ambient lighting. The heated, adjustable design leather seats are electrically adjustable and come with a memory function, along with the head restraints, steering wheel, and door mirrors.
At around 2.5 tonnes, and possessed of a colossally powerful engine, the G63 AMG is a vehicle which requires stabilising features.
The 4Matic four-wheel drive supplies excellent traction, whilst an enhanced Electronic Stability Programme with Acceleration Skid Control redistributes torque to prevent any loss of control.
These systems supplement the strong ABS system and Brake Assist, which detects when drivers are carrying out an emergency stop and adds extra pressure to the brake pedal.
Distronic Plus cruise control and Blind Spot Assist, proactive measures which warn of following vehicles in front too closely or making dangerous lane changes.
The rigid structure of the G63 AMG provides a great deal of protection to occupants in itself.
In the event of an accident the driver and passengers are shielded from harm by front, side and window airbags, as well as Neck-Pro Comfort head restraints.
Even when propelling a vehicle as large and solid as the G63 AMG, the manufacturer’s monstrous 5.5 litre V8 engine delivers extraordinary speed and dynamism.
544hp and 760Nm of torque between 2,000-5,000rpm takes the 4x4 from a standing start to 52mph in 5.4 seconds, and enables it to achieve a top speed of 130mph.
A 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission changes smoothly, ensuring a relentless surge of power on faster roads.
The “ladder” chassis and rigid-axle suspension of the G63 AMG ensures that it can take more stress and punishment than its toughest off-road rivals, making it almost unstoppable on any surface.
Locking differentials, meanwhile, enable it to continue when only one of its wheels has traction, allowing the vehicle to climb gradients of up to 80 degrees.
Approach and departure angles of 27 degrees and the ability to ford up to 60cm of water guarantee that there are few places the G63 AMG cannot go.
