WHAT DOES CLA MERCEDES STAND FOR?

The Mercedes-Benz range of models is extensive, and at times it can be overwhelming to understand what all of the different variations of letters mean. The German manufacturer uses letters and “Class” models to distinguish between their different offerings and it is fair to say that there are a fair few combinations to get used to.

THE FIRST LETTERS

The C, E and S-Class, for example, have long histories in motoring, having been part of the Mercedes-Benz range for a number of years and becoming leaders in their respective markets. Those three models in particular have a meaning behind the letter: Comfort, Executive and Special. The first letter then generally represents the model of the car, and others have joined through the years including the A-Class.

SUBSEQUENT LETTERS AND NUMBERS

Many Mercedes-Benz models have various other letters, and indeed numbers, after the first. CL, for example, meaning Lightweight Coupe, and X, referring to 4x4 or vehicles with four-wheel-drive. There are a number of combinations combining class with model features in order to make up the vast range of Mercedes-Benz models.

There are also numbers that will follow the letters to identify the type of Mercedes-Benz it is, and the numbers make up the engine composition, which will be listed in litres in relation to the engine displacement, for example the C300. Over the years there have been different ways Mercedes-Benz has identified models and used different numbers to mean different things. If you are in any doubt, you can refer to the individual model page or the model’s handbook.

Additionally, there may be a lowercase letter at the end of the model’s name. this indicates the fuel type:

  • c: compressed natural gas
  • d: diesel
  • e: electric or plug-in hybrids
  • h: hybrid or BlueTec hybrid

THE MERCEDES-BENZ CLA

Of course, the different letters can be combined to create different models, as is the case with the Mercedes-Benz CLA, meaning a lightweight A-Class Coupe. The CLA is a model with very sleek, coupe styling with the added practicality of two rear doors.

While the model naturally has less room than the standard A-Class, it does offer a coupe experience and looks with some additional room for the comfort of passengers and the accommodation of luggage.

The CLA has clear links to the bigger CLS when it comes to styling, and to build on its sporting pretentions, all models as standard are fitted with 18" 5-twin-spoke AMG alloy wheels and AMG body styling. Interior-wise, there are excellent features including the MBUX infotainment system, leather sports seats and two-zone climate control along with keyless go, sat-nav and wireless phone charging. Safety is second to none with all models benefiting from a host of options including brake and lane-keeping assistance.

A range of engines are available, starting with the 1.3-litre petrol engine, with 7-speed transmission, and all powertrains offer an excellent level of performance, whether petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid.
