Crafter-based bespoke conversions for tipper, Luton or dropside
When you need a van for a specific job, from delivering building materials to home removals, you need a specialist conversion. And there are plenty of converters to choose from, who’ll put a tipper, Luton or dropside body on a Volkswagen van chassis. Some are excellent, others perhaps less so.
Volkswagen, typically, is keen to offer its customers a choice of van conversions with the same levels of build quality and reliability as the base vehicle. So it has appointed a network of independent Recognised Converters under the Engineered to Go banner, all of which are Volkswagen approved and meet rigorous technical and commercial inspections. Each Engineered to Go converted vehicle comes with the same warranty and aftersales support that you’d find on the company’s standard vehicles.
Engineered to Go Dropside
Working with specialist converters Ingimex, Volkswagen offers a Crafter-based dropside with a choice of single or double cab and three wheelbases. Depending on the model, it carries up to 1400kg payload and is engineered to the latest European design standards. Features like a one-piece, 15mm non-slip birch deck, three-level load lashing and lashing rings tested to 800kg make it a lasting and dependably ally throughout the working week, while the seamless aluminium panels are ideal for livery. Comes with full 3-year warranty.
Engineered to Go Luton
When you regularly need to carry large, bulky items you need the extra interior volume of a Luton conversion. VW has worked with Ingimex to offer a single-cab, 4325mm wheelbase Crafter-based Luton with an indicative payload of 1000kg. The sides and bulkhead are in GRP with no visible fixings, making them ideal for livery. The same is true of the high-strength Ingimex rear shutter. Inside, there’s Ingimex’s unique four-tier load restraint system for deck lashing, load lock lashing of the Ingimex telescopic load pole system. A rear footstep is fitted as standard and the body can be readily converted to incorporate a tail-lift. A full 3-year warranty comes as standard.
Engineered to Go Tipper
Conversion specialists VFS offer the Engineered to Go Crafter Tipper in a choice of two models – the 3665mm wheelbase single cab or a 4325mm double cab. Payload for the single cab is 1100kg and both models meet the European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval standards. The conversion features a high-strength steel platform, direct-acting 5-stage underfloor ram, and a manual tailboard release with ‘tip over’ and ‘tip through’ function. Tipper control is by wander lead with emergency stop. Comes with full 3-year warranty.
Crafter: strength in depth
All the van conversions featured here are based on Volkswagen’s latest big van, the Crafter. It’s the largest van the company makes and was launched back in 2017 with a choice of wheelbases as well as single or double cab bodies. CR 30, CR 35 and CR 50 are the model names covering the respective 3.0, 3.5 and 5.0 tonne GVW weight categories. Crafter is powered by VW's dedicated 2.0 TDI commercial diesel engine, available in a choice of power outputs. It comes as standard with four airbags, stability control, automatic post-collision braking and crosswind assist, while Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist and Emergency Front-Assist are all optional. Useful options (depending on your chosen conversion) include hands-free reverse parking, trailer assist, which makes reversing with a trailer a breeze, and side assist, which is an extension of the parking sensors that tells you if there is any object encroaching on your turn-in radius.
Verdict: The Engineered to Go range offers a wide choice of body styles, functionality and cab features, with the advantage that the base vehicle is one of the most advanced and appealing you can drive. Because VW works closely with its chosen converters you can be sure that everything on the conversion works as a Volkswagen should, and is covered by a comprehensive warranty.
