Volvo has unveiled details of its latest flagship saloon, the S90, which is set to replace the S80 at the top of the range.
The chassis technology will be based on the Volvo XC90 and the exterior design draws inspiration from the 2011 Volvo Universe Concept. A V90 estate version is expected to be added at some point after the release later in 2015.
The S90 will have a range-topping hybrid T8 ‘Twin Engine’ that includes a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine powering the front wheels with a 79bhp electric motor powering the rear.
This will allow for an all-electric range of 30 miles, with fuel economy of more than 100mpg. Two diesel engines will also be available, labelled as the D4 and D5, with the D5 offering more power with 222bhp and the D4 better fuel economy with 56mpg.
Vice President of Product Strategy at Volvo, Lex Kerssemakers said: “We have to learn from the XC90. The incredible reaction we’ve had to that car shows that we are on the right track with design, the interior treatment and the in-car technology.”
Inside, the dashboard is uncluttered and clear, with just six buttons providing access to the on-board technology through the control screen.
